Metro: Last Light: Review

Dmitry Glukhovsky Once, as a result of the chemical games of his imagination, he created a very original mixture: he crossed the theme of the apocalypse with the realities of Russian reality, abandoning the survivors in the depths of the Moscow subway. The idea gained popular love, and therefore her exit beyond the book publications was a matter of time. The first one realized the Ukrainian studio 4A Games, creating an excellent game “Metro 2033” based on the book of the same name. There were a lot of people who wanted to wander around the tunnels of the subway. Today’s client, Metro: Last Light, Although he moved away from following the word of the writer, he promised to correspond to the spirit of the original in everything.

Black, white – what’s the difference?

Last Light continues the history of “Metro 2033”. The developers as canonical accepted the poor ending of the first part, when Artem sent another Moscow population of black. However, during the bombing, one of the representatives of an extinct look at once hid somewhere under the bush and safely survived the misfortune. The bosses of the order will learn about the “lucky man”, and Artem receives the task of finding and destroying the bastard. As the guy is tormented by doubts and moral dilemmas on the topic “execute or pardon”, he enters the adult political life of the metro, whose participants are gnawing for power and are ready to go to extremely immoral acts to achieve their goals. We will meet different groups, for example, fascists and communists, with whom Artem, of course, is in insoluble class contradictions.

In truth, the plot is not impressive. Enough scenario moves come across everywhere: evil plans for the seizure of the world (subway scale, of course), betrayal, clumsy hoaxes. The intriguing flashbacks of Artem in the end also turn out to be a zilch – no shocking breakdown of the integration will be found here. Still, from projects oriented primarily on history, you expect more.

But what pleases is the presence of several endings. The game, being through the linear, in some places provides freedom of choice – to save a woman from bandits or not, leave alive or kill the surrendering enemy, and so on. In addition, the style of passage affects the final – Last Light allows you to advance in the plot almost without bloodshed.

Atmospheric pressure

Well, if there are “literary” games in the world, then Last Light clearly refers to their number. Obviously, the priority task of the developers was to convey the atmosphere of books Glukhovsky. And it’s not even so much the stunning graphics and design of the locations of the Moscow subway and surface. The authors prescribed hundreds of dialogs between the inhabitants of the metro, not a word not related to the main storyline. Every two steps, Artem stumbles on the dangling about all kinds of household trifles of underground inhabitants. It is even difficult to say what takes more time – shootings or listening to ubiquitous conversations. Watching how the old man tells the children about mythical elephants and giraffes, or looking at the whole fifteen -minute performance on the stage of the new Bolshoi Theater, you involuntarily penetrate the atmosphere. Then, lonely wandering around the tunnels, you feel that there is not just the scenery around, but the space filled with its own history.

The only thing that spoils the impression of the atmosphere is the voice acting of the characters. The voices of most residents of the subway are greatly dissonated with a common mood. Когда ситуация предполагает проявление страха и ужаса — герои говорят с апломбом;Instead of sorrow and longing for a lost relative in intonations, incomprehensible vigor sounds. In addition, all emotions are played; Not sure that the heroes were voiced by professional actors. A trifle – but annoying.

Noise in the subway is prohibited

Local stealth also leaves a somewhat strange impression. Yes, opponents really react to loud sounds – if you decide to strike in a balalaika, the fighters will immediately come off from their own affairs and rush in search of a noise source. Without finding one, they will turn to a favorite explanation of paranormal activity: probably rats. Who else can play balalaika?

But if everything is in order with the hearing of the inhabitants of the metro, then with the vision of the case is much worse. Turning off the light and holding at least a meter from the enemies passing by, most episodes will pass without shooting at all. Sometimes you wonder how these short -sighted guys manage to not beat your forehead against the wall. In general, the “inconspicuous” passage here is a rude. If you do not suffer from beams of humanism and are not afraid of bad ending – you can spit on “rat” methods and in an honest battle to fight for peace around the world.

The “shooting” part of the game can be divided into two components – fights with people and hunting for all demonic creatures. It became more fun to shoot – the promised plausible physics of objects, as well as an improved (but far from ideal) artificial intelligence here on the spot. Artem can carry three “guns” with him, each of which is allowed to improve, for example, increasing the armor -piercing or equipping with a more convenient sight.

During meetings with monsters, a horror-component project is manifested. Typically, the main character is accompanied by partners who dilute the horror of their monologues overhanging over Moscow; However, when Artem is left alone, and we are forced to take a walk along the spider den or cross some section of the capital, you feel how the soul begins a tour of the heels. I want to climb under the table from the sounds that precede the appearance of the creatures. Yes, they are announced by an order of magnitude better than people – long mournful moans that penetrate Moscow strongly interfere with enjoying the beauty of the landscapes, forcing the player to fidget on the chair.

The appearance of the mutants is also impressive: flying demons, swamp monsters, crustacean monsters – they are all remarkably detailed, have their own habits and tactics of battle.

Metro: Last Light – A sort of Call of Duty domestic sociable, devoid of militarians and transferred to the Moscow subway. Often you are lost and cannot understand whether you play or watch a movie – the bet here is made for entertainment and atmosphere. The impression is spoiled only by the careless voice acting of dialogs. In terms of gameplay “Ray of Hope” cannot be called outstanding – before us is a solid, but standard shooter with almost a staged stealth.

In other words, we got a real novel in a playful way that does not allow a superficial acquaintance diagonally, but requires thoughtful, slow reading, during which you constantly stop and relish every moment.

Pros: atmosphere;very worthy graphics;Great design.
Cons: terrible voice acting;primitive stealth;mediocre plot.
